20 Month Haley

You know what drove me nuts before I had a kid?  When people referred to their toddlers as XX amount of months.  Anything over a year really.  In my mind, a 1-year-old is a 1-year-old & a 2 year-old was a 2-year-old.  Everything in-between was all the same.

But here I am, I have a 20-month-old daughter.  Because when they are this little, every month matters.  There is a big difference between 12 months, 18-months, 20-months, and 24-months.  There just is.  I decided after she turns two I will probably stop counting by months.  I will just say, I have a 2-year-old.  But then again, I am not there yet.  Number 1 rule in parenting: All bets are off.

But today marks Haley's 20th month of life.  She is a third of a year away from being 2.  I say it that way, because 4 months seems like such a short amount of time and I am having difficulties comprehending that I will be having a 2-year-old soon.

Shall we discuss what life is like at this point?

  • Language is the big milestone right now.  Her vocabulary is amazing.  She repeats so many things and uses lots of words and phrases frequently.  She also signs, sometimes.
  • Haley frustrates easy.  I had a hunch that this would be part of her personality early on, and I am seeing it in toddler-hood. She wants what she wants, and she will scream if she doesn't get it as soon as she decides she wants something.  I make a good effort to conditioner her that this behavior does NOT work, but I realize this is probably going to be a battle not won easily.
  • Yesterday she pooped, took off her diaper, and painted herself and her crib with it.  Fun.
  • She is getting somewhat picky.  She loves eggs or oatmeal for breakfast, but recently not a big fan of a lot of meats or vegetables   She will eat almost any fruit.  So sometimes I have to get creative in what I cook to try to get her to eat.  Truth be told, she prefers my mom's cooking.
  • Haley gets jealous when I hold other kids.  And she plays okay, not great, with other kids.  I think it is the age.  They are so self centered.  She likes playing with Spencer who is much older, but he givers her her way--so who wouldn't want to play with someone like that.
  • She thinks grandpa is pretty neat.  As soon as we walk into church on Sundays she yells "PA-PA. PA-PA".  He plays the guitar for church, and that is pretty awesome for her to see.
  • We recently got rid of the pacifier.  She kept giving them to the dog and I told her once they all got chewed up, we weren't buying anymore.  I am somewhat thankful it happened that way, just like ripping off a band-aid.  And it didn't end up being as bad as I thought it would be.  Bedtime isn't as easy as it use to be, but not terrible.
  • She sleeps 8-8 still and take one nap a day if we are lucky.  It is usually about an hour-hour half.
  • Her favorite TV show is Cailou.  It is my least favorite TV show.
  • She wears 3T clothing right now and seems fairly tall for her age--and a tad on the chunky side.
  • She is starting to play on her own, independently.  But she tends to like to tear things up more than anything.
  • She is high energy and loves to go-go-go.
  • She LOVES books.  One of her favorites is Old Hate, New Hat and OOps-a-Daisy
  • She enjoys coloring and eating crayons. She is also a fan of bubbles and stickers.
  • We have not officially started potty training and she still sleeps in a crib for now.
  • I love her to pieces and think she is absolutely perfect!

Fruit & Root Connection: Tangled Up

Certainly, I've expressed my aversion to hyper-spiritualized language before. It often feels contrived, lacking authenticity—a facade of piety. Perhaps it's projection. Maybe jealousy. Or it could stem from a sense of disillusionment with the Christian community. But every so often, amidst the noise, a truth resonates deeply. "There is a root and fruit connection between heart and behavior. People and situations do not determine our behavior; these things provide an occasion where our behavior reveals our hearts." - Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands I've been navigating through my anger, confronting myself in the mirror. What does this anger unveil about my own heart? Surely, they aren't as enraged with me. In fact, they probably don't spare me a second thought. If anything, they—as sincerely as they can muster—bemoan my status as an apostate. So pitiful. My fruit is anger. And too often, I'm tempted to point fingers elsewhere as the source of my...

If Your Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands....

Alright y'all, I need to post an actual blog post.  It's been awhile.I guess I have said " writers block".  Everytime I've sat down to blog, I've gotten this nasty attitude, like I just want to rant and complain.  I'm not a fan of giving a bad mood more than it deserves or letting people get on my nerves enough that it bleeds in my blog in the most passive-aggressive way possible.  So I won't go there this time.  Focusing on what I'm thankful for has been such a great practice, and has helped me avoid the above.  So here goes nothing.....I'll update a little bit on everthing I suppose.... Finally, life is beginning to slow down.I am so appreciative of the fact that the moving/settling in process is over ( only to do it all again in T minus 5 months....) In theory, there should be a big hole where our next house will be soon. For some reason I doubt that they will break ground this week, but I would be happy if they did...I'm stressed and ...

Never Say When

At some point in my journey, I forgot that church leaders are flawed humans too. I have a tendency to overly respect authority for the sake of their position. I assumed, being a pastor meant that there is some how a higher spiritual connection. Consequently, I would turn off my own discernment in favor for whatever I was being instructed to do by our church leader. The person I have grown to distrust the most and the person I betrayed the most was myself.  Examples: Early in our journey, we had a small group. For the most part, I LOVED small group nights. Until we had a change of seasons. I had just had my third baby. We were living in a rental property while renovating another home ourselves. I was working on leading our developing children's ministry and feeling over my head. Ian worked afternoons so either small group would take one of only two family nights or would be when he was working, leaving me to attend alone most of the time. Our small group had roughly 10-15 small chil...
